South Bank London attend launch of London Borough of Culture
Nic Durston, South Bank Employers’ Group CEO attended the launch of the London Borough of Culture with Mayor of London Sadiq Khan at City Hall this morning.
This is a new competition for the 32 London boroughs to apply for funding to lead a game-changing cultural programme. Two winning boroughs will be named London Borough of Culture, one in 2019 and one in 2020 and up to six other boroughs will receive support to deliver bespoke cultural projects.
Inspired by the UK City and European Capital of Culture Programmes, London Borough of Culture will put culture at the heart of the community, celebrating the unique and distinctive creativity, character and diversity of London’s people and places.
It is a chance for boroughs to be bold and imaginative, working collaboratively across their communities and with artists to deliver against local priorities and ambitions, to explore new ideas and pilot new partnerships.
‘We are delighted to be involved early on in this pioneering London-wide initiative. We have seen the benefits and positive legacies of both UK and European City of Culture and I am sure the Borough of Culture will also be a huge success. Many of our members host and consume much of the of the cultural activities on South Bank, the Cultural Heart of London, so we very much welcome this initiative.’
