Wedding Fever!

April 26th, 2018 | by Jennifer Edwards

Wedding Fever!

Whether you're a fan of the royal family or whether you remain somewhat perplexed at the zeal at which the news and tabloids keep us abreast of each new development in the lead up to said wedding: one thing is for sure, you won't be able to escape the frenzy on Saturday, May 19. And if you can't beat them, you might as well join in. Come on you grouches, get in the spirit and enjoy the party atmosphere!

Even if we can't all be at Windsor Castle, South Bank has a whole lot of special events and offers to soak up the festive feeling.

  • Cheers to the royal couple!

We're crossing our fingers for a sun-filled May wedding for the happy couple, and also so we can enjoy an al fresco glass of bubbly on OXO's amazing 8th-floor terrace! Chin-chin, your royal highnesses.

Yes, OXO's 250-foot garden terrace will be open in time for the Royal Wedding celebrations, and stretching across the RestaurantBar and Brasserie, it's one of the best views in London. Front row seats proffer views of St Paul’s, the Thames and the City of London. You could even opt for one of OXO's delectable afternoon teas for a truly patriotic homage to the Royal couple.

Why not try the Meghan Sparkle Cocktail, a suitably elegant concoction of gin, cloudy apple juice and rose syrup topped with Harvey Nichols English Sparkling Wine and garnished with mint... Needless to say, this is a special, one day only cocktail for the special day!

  • Free River Travel!

Enjoy a right royal knees up on the river Thames - MBNA Thames Clippers are offering anyone called Meghan (or Megan, they won't quibble on the spelling) or Harry FREE River Roamer Travel! That means unlimited hop-on-hop-off travel between 17 piers for the day.

Enjoy a no-effort ride up to Greenwich and then head to the lawns of the National Maritime Museum and see Harry and Meghan tie the knot on their giant screen... The perfect way to spend a Saturday!

  • Party Time at The Old Vic

Did you know that her Majesty the Queen's first visit to the theatre was on 12 Jan 1938, where she saw Ralph Richardson, Robert Helpmann and Vivien Leigh in A Midsummer Night’s Dream- at The Old Vic?

The Old Vic is actually celebrating it's 200th anniversary this year with their Bicentenary Variety Night which falls the weekend before the Royal Wedding ib Saturday 12 May. What better place to be than the Queen's fave theatre to soak up the royal atmosphere? There'll be comedy from BBC Radio 4, musical performances from hip-hop musical Sylvia; dance and exclusive performances and a brand new musical venture from the Critics’ Circle Most Promising Newcomer and 2018 Olivier Award winner Sheila Atim (Girl from the North Country). There's still much more to be announced so stay tuned.

  • Practice your royal wave aboard City Cruises

Glide through London aboard one of City Cruises' boats and see the city from a whole new perspective!

Practice your Royal Wave and perhaps don some gloves and a hat if you're really getting into the spirit of things.

City Cruises offer a range of sightseeing tours which are great fun whether you're a visitor or whether you're a born and bred Londoner (yes, really! As the rare breed myself, I can confirm it's a good laugh). There is also the added bonus of an onboard bar, so you can even enjoy a glass of bubbly on the top deck, wind in your hair.

We recommend a great package where you can get a trip on City Cruises plus tickets for a spin on the London Eye for just £38.40 Adult and £28.80 for kids.

  • Brilliant British Traditions

Well, ding dong, old chap! Isn't Afternoon Tea in the Library Lounge a spiffing affair?

Indulge in a quintessentially British tradition at The London Marriott at County Hall's wood-panelled library, with views right on to Westminster. It couldn't get more English than this. Scones, jam and clotted cream, cucumber sandwiches and a nice pot of tea... Or if you'd rather celebrate their Highnesses' special day (any excuse, hey?!) opt for a glass of bubbly. How boujie.

  • Blossom City

You might not have made it to Windsor Castle, but be thankful you're away from the crowds and enjoy a delicious cocktail amongst the blooms at Skylon South Bank.

Located within the Royal Festival Hall and with fabulous views across London from their floor to ceiling windows, this sun-drenched oasis is the perfect place to ceremoniously clink glasses and "chin-chin" the newlyweds.

Skylon are launching Blossom City from 1 May - 17 June and will be bringing beautiful blossoms and florals into their cocktails as well as decor.

  • Happily Ever After

They may not be getting married in Far Far Away, however, Megan and Harry will be living a real-life fairy-tale on their wedding day.

Our favourite gentle green ogre and his sassy bride Princess Fiona paved the way for the modern-day fairy tale on screen, however, Megan and Harry are doing it in real life (IRL).

Get those warm fuzzy feelings back with a trip to Shrek's Adventure - a salute to the royal couple (of sorts). Take the kids during the day or attend a Lates with mates for a trip down memory lane, with a script full of cheekiness and peppered with adult humour and double entendres...

  • An inspired exhibition

If you find yourself strolling around South Bank and looking for something free and inspirational, pop into Morely College's Gallery, where they have a fantastic exhibition taking place throughout the month of May.

The works on display showcase the finalists of Inspired by V&A, a national art competition that asks entrants to draw on the renown Victoria & Albert Museums collections for inspiration to create new work. The works on display will include textiles, fashion and jewellery through to sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, painting and digital media and have been selected by an esteemed panel of V&A judges.
