Penny Lecture: Soldier Photographers Of The First World War

This talk, which discusses the photographs taken by ten soldiers during their time on various fronts during the First World War, and which are now held in the Imperial War Museum, takes place in Emma Cons Hall, Morley College on 23 November 2018.

Led by Alan Wakefield, Chairman of the Salonika Campaign Society and member of the British Commission for Military History, the talk covers the way in which images taken by these amateur photographers made it into the newspapers, the attitude of the authorities to the soldier photographer and how this work sits alongside the output professional official photographers. 

Alan has worked as a curator at the National Maritime Museum and RAF Museum, Head of the Photograph Archive of the Imperial War Museum and Head of First World War & Early 20th Century Conflict at the IWM, as well as co-author and editor of numerous WWI books and journals. He is now working on a book about First World War campaign in Mesopotamia writes and lectures on various aspects of military history.
