Top Summer Highlights

July 13th, 2018 | by Jennifer Edwards

Top Summer Highlights

Summer has well and truly arrived - June has delighted with warm weather and sunshine, and we're now riding the wave quite pleasantly into July and August, with more sunshine-filled days on the horizon.

We are a little haven in which to practice some much-needed R&R amongst the hustle and bustle of central London - we welcome you to our green roof gardens at Royal Festival Hall, free outdoor River Stage at the National Theatre, our host of foodie pop-ups and shady riverside walkways...

Although you'll feel the calm, there are lots of exciting events happening throughout the summer months, so make sure you read this guide for the unmissable summer events in South Bank.

  • River Stage Festival

The river stage is back at the National Theatre by popular demand from 13 July – 12 August, with a mix of live music, dancing, DJs, family workshops, club nights and theatre, all summer, all for free! Located outside the National Theatre, with lots of deck chairs, exciting foodie pop-ups and craft beers on tap.

  • Southbank Centre Foodie Pop-ups

Southbank Centre market offers some of the best street food in London, from aromatic Indian curries to Korean BBQ, German Sausages, Turkish sweets, Sicilian arancini and steak and chips. Make sure you also check out the summer foodie pop-ups, located around the Southbank Centre.

  • Free Art All Summer

[email protected] is a free art gallery at the base of the OXO Tower which hosts a very varied range of exhibitions, all completely free of charge, so make sure you stop by during your wander in South Bank. We recommend a coffee at Gabriel’s Wharf, a bustling enclave of shops, restaurants and cafes, right next door for after.

Bring your own bucket and spade - the Southbank Centre will supply 85 tonnes of golden, play sand for you to enjoy for free – and hopefully some sunshine to go with it.

  • free Skating, Music, Art + Film

Perhaps one of South Bank’s best-hidden secrets, House of Vans is located below the train tracks of Waterloo station in a series of atmospheric tunnels. The venue includes a gallery, a 100-seater cinema, a venue for gigs, an amazing scoop where you can get skateboard lessons and a New York style cafe/diner. Best of all, everything is completely free, (apart from the cafe!) and caters to both kids and adults alike. (Make sure you check out their summer cinema programme!)

  • Witness the tension

The highly acclaimed immersive theatre show has now been extended to March 2019 due to popular demand. Agatha Christie’s enthralling whodunit takes place at the old county hall law courts, setting the scene on the theatrical masterpiece most perfectly.

  • Just Zip it!

Adrenalin junkies looking for something slightly alternative to do this summer should head to Archbishop’s park, just a 10 minute leisurely stroll away from the hustle and bustle of the London Eye and towards the 35M high zip wire. If launching yourself off isn’t scary enough for you, try the Mega Drop – like a bungee jump, but without the bounce.
